As the mother of a NICU graduate, I understand how important it is to do everything you can to care for your infant from the very start. There are many ways you can begin to establish a bond with your baby even before they go home with you.

BONDING is about responding to your baby’s needs with love, warmth and care. When you do this, you become a special, trusted person in your baby’s life. You help your baby feel safe and secure. This lays the foundation for all areas of your baby’s development.

One way to help establish an early bond between babies and caregivers that must be separated from each other (such as babies in NICU Care) is to SHARE YOUR SMELL.

According to StanfordChildrens.org, studies have found that newborns have a strong sense of smell. Newborns prefer the smell of their own mother, especially her breastmilk.
